The Morning Bell for Thursday February 23, 2012

Today's ringer: Illy coffee

I'm enjoying one right now. It rings my bell every morning. Drip drip drip in my cup cup cup. Read that as if you were Maya Angelou. It'll be awesome.

The bottom feeders of the East are without a doubt on a joint mission to outcrap themselves. It's as if they have called a collective suck-o-thon and they all want to cross the tape first, er, or last...

Deals are not being made right now, at least not at the pace one could expect so we can anticipate a busy deadline day.

You wanna hear something fun and interesting and everything Pierre Gauthier is not? Listen to a 17-minute interview Brian Burke gave to TSN Radio yesterday. 17 MINUTES. He answered every question head on. He gave insight about the dynamics of negotiating with GMs in the league. He discussed his personality. Nothing was off limits. Nothing vague and secretive and we run our team like we're high and mighty aristocrats. It's a freaking hockey team. Get over yourselves. Brian Burke can buy me a Guiness any day. Heck he can even kiss me on the lips for a split second. Wait...no he can't.

Will AK46 depart this city in the next few hours? Sure, let's unload him when his value is at an all-time low. Or is it high? Heck with AK you never know anymore. I mean c'mon he's playing on your top line with Scott Gomez, he's gotta be worth something.

I love you, Brian Burke. I'll make duck à l'orange for you next time you're in town.

Sorry no Burke for me. Kommasarick, Pheanuf, no goalies, soft Phil, no way I trade our Gomez for all his problems.

Just so we're clear, you would not trade Gomez for Phaneuf, Komisarek or Phil Kessel? I just want to make sure I understood you correctly. I was afraid your purple elephant nickel was too heavy for the fingernail cake.

Steve, put your dentures and brain back in.

No, I am saying our anchor is Gomez, the Leaf are built around no goal, no defense and a soft forwards. I would trade Gomez for a bumper sticker.

Ok, so let's just be clear. If this were math, you would stand by this equation:

Sorry no Burke for me. Kommasarick, Pheanuf, no goalies, soft Phil, no way I trade our Gomez for all his problems.

Okay for the first time ever I did not clearly communicate my thoughts. In summary, Goat has done a better job than Burke. Now Goat largely inherited his team and Burke has made his team from scratch, and he has made some terrible moves, 11 million cap space tied up in Phauf and Kommi. Trading two top ten draft picks for Phil Kessel. Not realizing you need an NHL goalie to win in the NHL.
Goat made a gut wrenching move on Halak, and little else good or bad. Jury is still out on Cammi, but his time on this team was over.

If we could trade Gomez for Komisarek I would freaking take it. Sorry Escott, the great nation of Toronto needs you to save them as you have saved us.

@Steve Trust me when I say that this is not the first time you did not clearly communicate your thoughts. Gauthier did not inherit this team. He was right there as Bob Gainey made his moves. Brian Burke, as much as I hate to admit it, is a waaaay better GM than Gauthier. He's better at making trades, he's better at negotiating, he's better at communicating with fans, and he's a better lover. Anybody who thinks different is an idiot.

And the jury is not out on the Cammalleri trade. It was a shit move. I'm not saying we should've kept him, but the price would have gone up for a proven playoff performer had he waited a little longer, instead of panicking like the little bitch that he is.

@Don, your right about Cammi, could have got Borque plus a second rounder. Fit of pique by Pierre, a Gallic fever trade.

Bottom line Burke has had 4 years and has not made the leafs into a playoff team let alone a contender.
